Harvard GSE Public Speaking and Debate Association

Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Public Speaking and Debate Association, an officially recognized student organization within Harvard University, is dedicated to fostering essential communication and critical thinking skills through public speaking and debate events.

In our Student X Faculty Debate event I partnered with Professor Robert Jenkins — Former Director of Education at UNICEF — to engage in discourse against Professor Fernando Reimers on the challenging topic: “THBT the Global South should prioritize 21st Century Education over Foundational Learning.”

The event garnered an audience of over 100 peers, teaching fellows, administration and faculty. Professor Jenkins and I’s team, side opposition achieved a resounding victory in the debate.

In Debate and Speech 101 a weekly student lead debate and speech event, I taught argument development to peers during general meetings. This rewarding experience involves sharing techniques on how to construct compelling arguments, refute opponents and effectively communicate ideas. By guiding participants through the nuances of persuasive writing and speaking, students enhance their critical thinking skills while fostering a collaborative learning environment.

HGSE PSADA brings together a variety of diverse perspectives, encourages critical discourse among participants, and creates a safe and supportive space to challenge and thoughtfully approach difficult topics.
